Secondary aims were to investigate whether the malnutrition criteria proposed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and the American Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ASPEN) could be used to assess the spinal cord injury population. Methods: Twenty-three spinal cord injury subjects completed a Vioscreen food frequency questionnaire where nutrient data and Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI) scores were calculated. Anthropometric data and pressure injury history were collected during the study visit. Food security status was assessed with a validated two-item screening tool. Malnutrition status was assessed using the proposed 2012 AND/ASPEN malnutrition criteria. Results: Mean HEI-2010 score of the sample population was 65 out of a total 100 points. This is 112% of the 2011-12 NHANES mean of 58.27 points. Nine subjects consumed less than 75% of RDA for vitamin C. Four subjects consumed less than 75% of RDA for zinc. Nine subjects consumed less than 75% of calculated protein needs. One subject consumed less than 75% of RDA for vitamin A. No subjects consumed less than 75% of RDA for selenium. Three subjects were screened at risk for food insecurity. Two subjects met the 2012 AND/ASPEN criteria for malnutrition. 2017-08-03 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1492519594677599 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1492519594677599 restricted--full text unavailable until 2022-05-08 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
