During virus assembly, two copies of viral genomic RNA (gRNA) are selectively packaged into viral particles via specific interactions between Gag and gRNA packaging signal, despite the vast abundance of cellular RNAs and spliced viral RNAs. However, the mechanism by which Gag specifically recognizes gRNA is not completely understood.
