One of the reasons for its under-adoption is the difficulty with assessing sustainability performance, which is necessary for the proper management of sustainability initiatives. The mounds of metrics available for the assessment of sustainability performance create confusion and a need for a parsimonious, coherent way of pursuing sustainability performance measurement (SPM). This research proposes to build a base framework, which captures the most essential performance areas with the least number of metrics that could be applied to different industries. In order to assess and enhance the usability of the framework, an application industry in which sustainability is regarded as essential for competitiveness is selected. In doing so, the authors coin the term sustainability entitlement and operationalize this construct in the context of the devised framework, with case companies from the chemicals industry. The findings support the selection of the chemicals industry as sustainability being critical for these companies. Also, the disconnect between SPM beliefs and practice is uncovered and discussed. These findings highlight the ongoing evolution of sustainability in practice and, by means of identifying sustainability entitlement as a proxy for understanding sustainability potential, promises to contribute to the discussion on ways to accelerate the adoption of advanced practices. 2016-12-20 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1468876018 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1468876018 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
