In the ensuing chapters, eunuchs in literature ranging from the Classical to the early Christian period are subjected to a scholarly analysis, many of them for the first time. This comprehensive analysis reveals that eunuchs’ presence indicates a breakdown in the rules of physiognomy and, consequently, a breakdown of major categories of identity, such as ethnicity or gender. Significantly, this broader pattern manifests in a distinct way, within each chronological and geographical period. 2016-12-28 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1465737368 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1465737368 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
