Asian Studies China App Company Startup HR China Business This paper investigates some of the human resource constraints faced by start up companies in the Chinese tech sector, focusing on applications for mobile devices. The relevant laws and regulations relating to firms operating in this industry as internet related industries face a unique set of regulatory hurdles. Also, there is a discussion of first generation internet startups in China, which went on to shape the Chinese internet landscape. These internet giants prevented many startups from finding success initially, but after several years Chinese tech startups began to gain a footing, especially cell phone applications. Knowledge flows are paramount to the success of Chinese tech startups. Technology flows and cultural factors that affect them are integral for understanding the success of companies. Examination of the app makers in the Chinese market suggests that they may be turning to foreign markets, especially the US, due to poor market conditions in China. To understand these companies, “born global firms” are discussed. These firms depend on international business and, therefore, have interesting organizational structures. One of the findings of this paper is that Chinese tech companies planning to succeed in the app market should focus on localization efforts in design and marketing of software applications, specifically through the inclusion of familiar graphic expressions and popular slang expressions. “Born global firms” succeed by finding niche audiences for their products in foreign markets. The localization process should be the main focus of these firms, so companies should focus on universities for recruiting as they may possess foreign talent. 2015-08-14 Chinese text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1429748523 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1429748523 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
