The quality of shallow waters in wetlands is particularly vulnerable to human-induced wastes. The Old Woman Creek wetland on the south shore of Lake Erie is a small and shallow tributary. It is the only National Estuarine Research Reserve on the Great Lakes and the only freshwater estuary in the national system. Information on the suspended sediment concentration in Old Woman Creek will help in understanding the function of the estuary in the Great Lakes ecosystem, which has a regional and national significance. This study investigated remote sensing techniques for quantifying suspended sediment concentrations for Old Woman Creek from Landsat-7 Level 1T products. The geometric performance of the 15 Landsat-7 images was examined and image registration was conducted. The apparent reflectance data of the Landsat-7 images were atmospherically corrected to result in the surface reflectance data. The atmospheric correction is more critical for aquatic environments than for land, since the radiance signal from the water column is small. To improve the accuracy of the atmospheric correction, the atmospheric data products derived from the MODIS Terra satellite were used. The MODIS Terra has instruments under nearly identical atmospheric conditions as the Landsat-7 satellite. The atmospheric data products were used in this study to account for the spatial and temporal variance of water vapor, ozone and aerosols. A regression model was developed to quantify the suspended sediment concentrations (and turbidity) at a sampling station in the Old Woman Creek using the corrected Landsat-7 ETM+ data. Results showed that a strong log-linear relationship exists between the suspended sediment concentration (and turbidity) and the visible green band, which corresponds to the Landsat-7 ETM+ band 2, and the near infrared band, which corresponds to the Landsat-7 ETM+ band 4. The logarithmic equation developed for quantifying turbidity (measured in NTU) is: Ln(Turbidity) = 15.953+2.8994*Ln(B2)+ 1.3880*Ln(B4) with adj. R2 =75.1%. The logarithmic equation developed for quantifying suspended sediment concentration (mg/l) is: Ln(SSC) = 14.727+ 2.5228*Ln(B2) +1.3147*Ln(B4) with adj. R2 =74.9%. These equations can be used to predict the suspended sediment concentration and turbidity in Old Woman Creek. This study has demonstrated the usefulness of Landsat-7 ETM+ data to quantify the suspended sediment concentration and turbidity in Old Woman Creek. This study also showed the usefulness of the MODIS Terra atmospheric data products for a more accurate atmospheric correction of Landsat-7 imagery for application to water quality studies. 2005 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1421164951 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1421164951 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
