This study was completed within the theoretical context of developmental psychology's Dynamic Systems Theory and pedagogy's literature dealing with the children's opportunities to respond within the physical activity setting. Each child was given eight 30 minute swimming lessons. The odd numbered swimming sessions were without platforms and the even numbered sessions utilized platforms. A single subject alternating treatments design, with no initial baseline, was utilized in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the presence of the platforms. The number of locomotor behaviors and variability found for each behavior and independent variable were counted. The two most critical hypotheses of this study were accepted. The first hypothesis stated that more locomotor behaviors would be demonstrated by children when the swimming environment was supplied with platforms than when the platforms were absent. The second hypothesis stated that more locomotor behaviors would be demonstrated by the child who was typically developing than by the child who was mentally disabled regardless of whether the platforms were present or absent.Factors which may have influenced the findings include the influence of illness on the performance and attendance of both of the children during the study. Each child's illness precluded their attendance at planned swimming sessions as well as minimizing their optimal performance just prior to and immediately following each children's illness. 1997 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1420637051 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1420637051 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
