The commission of this monument to the so-called Tyrannicides was exceptional in multiple respects. These statues seem have been the first public portrait sculptures in Greece without any traditional religious, funerary or votive function. Furthermore, the murder that this monument commemorated evidently had a negligible effect on both the removal of the Peisistratids and the foundation of democracy.
