New equipment and processes are being developed to utilize present resources optimally and save them for the future. Demolition of a building is a less preferred option these days due to land-fill space availability and the associated cost. Deconstruction is a process that contributes to sustainable development by stripping down building elements and reusing them for similar or other construction processes. Sustainable development is a process that optimally utilizes resources and conserves them for future use. Deconstruction offers environmental as well as economic sustainability. However, the process involves a greater risk for the workers as they have to deal with buildings that are often in a state of disrepair and also possible exposure to harmful physical, chemical and biological hazards. It is time consuming and requires a skilled workforce. Since deconstruction involves numerous issues concerning worker safety, it is necessary to develop a deconstruction plan before starting work. The deconstruction plan should address all the potential safety hazards on site. The evaluation of worker safety deconstruction should be a continuous process throughout the deconstruction project. This study aims to address safety issues in deconstruction projects with a focus on residential and small scale commercial buildings. Since the hazard identification process and site safety evaluation are complex, a software program has been developed to ease the decision making process. The perception of safety varies with individuals and as the term “safety” is fuzzy, a fuzzy logic approach has been used as an evaluation tool. The parameters used in evaluating the model are also fuzzy. The model was created by identifying the safety concerns on deconstruction sites and categorizing them into enabling and triggering causes. These events were then used to evaluate the final safety level of the site using fuzzy composition. The model helps in developing a site safety plan that can be used in formulating the deconstruction plan. This study includes an evaluation of the model using inputs from a diverse group consisting of personnel from academia and construction firms. Thus the model developed gives the user a clear perspective on the safety of the site in an uncertain situation. 2005 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1407401588 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1407401588 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
