Unfortunately, the field of art education has greatly ignored these advances in research, focusing only on physical and behavioral indicators of abuse. Due to the large number of child abuse cases appearing within schools over the past decade, it is important for educators to be prepared to detect abuse. Because art educators are in frequent contact with children’s artwork, it is ideal that they be knowledgeable about the possible graphic indicators of abuse that may appear within students’ work.This thesis is focused on the graphic indicators of abuse that have been found through previous research within the field of art therapy, and their use within the art education classroom. This thesis reviews literature within both the fields of art education and art therapy. The review resulted in finding 258 graphic indicators that have been mentioned in current research, and 60 indicators that were cited within two or more sources. These indicators are examined along with their relevance for their use in the classroom. The conclusion of this thesis is, simply, that art educators should be knowledgeable about current research linking graphic indicators to the detection of abuse, in order to better serve students.
