Art Education This study, a qualitative, action research project, centered on an elementary art teacher’s efforts to advance cognitive skills and develop meaning making strategies among students through the design and implementation of a new curriculum. The inquiry-based curriculum reflected a constructivist paradigm and focused on an examination of the art of Julie Taymor and works of art from various cultures that influenced her work. The curriculum evolved, and instructional strategies were altered, in accordance with the action research process.Participants in the study included the art educator as teacher-researcher and 66 fourth- and fifth-grade students attending art classes at the Urban Alternative Elementary School for International Studies. Two types of data were collected: a) student responses and b) teacher prompts and reflections on the curriculum. All data were classified in terms of six Response Type categories which corresponded to various aspects of art. Student response data indicated the degree to which students focused on these aspects of art. The majority of student responses occurred in the Descriptive and the Interpretive/Expressive categories. The number of responses within a category showed some correspondence to the type of activity (studio or non-studio) yielding the data.Student responses were categorized in terms of three Levels of Thinking categories in addition to the six Response Type categories. The majority of student responses (57%) represented lower-order thinking (LOT) when data was considered in total. However, some data sets from specific activities indicated a greater number of responses representing higher-order thinking (HOT). Three trends were noted: a) the number of HOT responses associated with studio activities was greater than those associated with non-studio activities, b) data collected later in the unit yielded greater numbers of HOT responses than data collected early in the unit, and c) more HOT statements were associated with the Interpretive/Expressive category than with any other response type.Teacher prompts were employed to facilitate group discussion and direct student thinking and indicated a pedagogical view of the teacher-researcher. Teacher prompts occurred most frequently in the Interpretive/Expressive and Historical/Cultural categories. Teacher prompt data were also classified in terms of five categories which corresponded with levels of thinking. An equal number of teacher prompts were associated with (a) statements or questions promoting higher-order thinking and (b) the provision of information to establish a knowledge base. Together, these two prompt types contained the majority (54%) of teacher prompts. 2002 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1407399165 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1407399165 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
