Modeling of the fuel use rate distribution of field operations (tillage, seeding and nitrogen side dressing) was accomplished by 1) collecting Controller Area Network (CAN) bus data to characterize wheeled tractor performance, 2) extending the "specific" model (Grisso et al. 2010) for prediction of wheeled tractor performance, and 3) calibration and validation of the extended model for predicting total fuel consumption during actual field operations. Compared to the fuel consumption model in ASABE standard (2011), the extended model performs better, and addresses fuel consumption estimation during headland turning. Differences between predicted and measured total fuel consumption were less than 2% for four of eight fields evaluated tested. Greater than 70% of the fuel use rates grouped by constant ground speed were normally distributed for both working and turning periods for field operations including tillage and seeding.
