Communication The purpose of this research was two-fold: First, to test more specific predictions of gain/loss framing effects based on prospect theory than have previously been explored in the field of communication, and second to demonstrate that the predictions of prospect theory and the expectancy value model can be observed simultaneously in the context of gain/loss framing effects. A two (frame: gain/loss) by two (behavior type: prevention/detection) experiment was conducted in which participants viewed manipulated health messages about the prevention and detection of sexually transmitted infections, and responded to surveys measuring variables predicted to moderate and mediate framing effects. The results suggest that a wider range of variables suggest by prospect theory are useful for understanding framing effects than those that are typically studied in framing studies in communication. 2014-07-09 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1397489060 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1397489060 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
