Psychology The purpose of the current study was to identify the prevalence of racial and gender discrimination experiences and the role these experiences play in the psychological well-being of Asian American female college students. It was hypothesized that frequency of experienced gender discrimination and frequency of experienced racial discrimination would significantly predict psychological symptomatology and self esteem. Results supported the hypotheses, in that lifetime experiences of racial and gender discrimination significantly predicted psychological symptoms and self esteem whereby experiences of discrimination were positively related to psychological symptoms and negatively related to self esteem. It was also found that recent experiences of racial and gender discrimination predicted psychological symptomatology, but not self esteem. Additionally, simultaneous regression analyses revealed that experiences of racial discrimination uniquely predicted more psychological outcome variables compared to gender discrimination. Another set of hypotheses proposed that experiences of racial and gender discrimination would account for a significant amount of variance in psychological symptomatology and self esteem, over and above that accounted for by generic daily hassles. This hypothesis was partially supported in that recent experiences of racial and gender discrimination accounted for a significant amount of variance in psychological symptoms, over and above that accounted for by generic daily hassles. Also, lifetime experiences of racial discrimination accounted for a significant amount of variance in psychological symptoms when the effects of generic daily hassles were partialled out. However, the same results did not hold for lifetime experiences of gender discrimination. Neither racial nor gender discrimination significantly predicted additional variance in self esteem, not accounted for by generic daily hassles. The importance of examining the combined impact of racial and gender discrimination on psychological health and the recency of discriminatory experiences among Asian American women is discussed. Data regarding the prevalence of experiences of racial and gender discrimination among Asian American female college students also are presented. Finally, limitations of the study, directions for future research, and implications for counseling are addressed. 1998 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1393346530 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1393346530 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
