Hewgley, Erin Fine Arts <p>For years, I have been chasing memories — chasing away some and chasing after many. As a child, I was my mother's surrogate memory. She suffered short-term memory loss due to a head injury. So, my relationship with memory began as a skill of survival for us both. Locating important items, remembering places, and recognizing people, my memory was sharply honed and it served us well. A number of experiences in my young adult years, beginning with being raped, caused me to have a much different relationship with memory. Most moments were spent trying to forget. Over the years, this mechanism for emotional survival became less essential on a daily basis, but was nonetheless seated in my sub-conscious. From desperately trying to forget certain memories, I lost the ability to retain many others. My complex relationship with memory, the push-pull of chasing away and chasing down memories, has led me here.</p><p>In this body of work, I retell, rewrite, and unravel memories through the materials with which I work and actions that I perform on them. The materials are my words, my phrases. The actions I perform on them allude to the experiences that they carry.
