Tripneustes predominantly occurs on limestone shelves and within exposed grassbeds where water flow is high and percent fines small. Lytechinus predominantly occurs within grassbeds in quiet waters where percent fines is high. Within one study area, however, both species co-occur on all three substrates studied. Thus, substrate alone can not be used to define the habitats of these urchins. Using a stepwise discriminant analysis, differences in habitat use by these two species can be characterized by sediments and hydraulic conditions. These variables also may influence the distribution of Tripneustes and Lytechinus. Water flow experiments in the field and laboratory document that the direction in which Lytechinus moves is determined by water flow. However, the intensity of ultraviolet light may influence whether this species does, in fact, move.
