Geology Seventy-one samples from a composite section of the Lower Triassic Thaynes Formation in the Confusion Range, west-central Utah, yielded 1673 identifiable conodont elements representing 14 multielement conodont species of six conodont genera. Six Smithian and Spathian conodont zones are recognized. The Parachirognathus-Furnishius Zone, the Neogondolella milleri Zone, and the herein established Neospathodus triangularis Zone are separated from the Platyvillosus asperatus Zone, the Neospathodus n. sp. G Zone, and the Neogondolella jubata Zone by a 400 foot nonproductive interval of redbeds.Abundant ammonites characteristic of the Meekoceras gracilitatis Zone occur with conodonts of the Parachirognathus-Furnishius Zone. Beds containing abundant specimens of the bivalve Eumorphotis multiformis are found in the Neospathodus triangularis Zone. Poorly preserved specimens of ammonites resembling Columbites were recovered from beds in the Platyvillosus asperatus Zone. Abundant specimens of the ammonite Pseudoceltites nevadi occur at the base of the Neospathodus n. sp. G Zone.Near the top of this zone an ammonite collection dominated by specimens of Ussurites hosei was made.Petrographic examination of samples from which conodonts were derived suggests that the distribution of Ellisonia triassica may be facies related. 1970 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391690845 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391690845 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
