This study attempts to reflect upon some of the thematic nuclei that characterize the writing of the novelist and art critic Marta Traba (Argentina, 1930 - Colombia, 1983). These nuclei are discussed in four major novels which are: Conversacion al sur (1981), En Cualquier lugar (1984), De la mañana a la noche: cuentos americanos (1986), and Casa sin fin (1988).The first nucleus examines the Latin American exile phenomenon in the 1980's as a dis-placement in space and time which entails a superposition of human experiences and cultural identities. This phenomenon is similarly interconnected, at a global level, with other transculturation processes which include the construction as well as the fragmentation of diasporic and nomadic communities, as well as the constant re-mapping of new geopolitical boundaries.Hegemonic politics of representation and the making/unmaking of liminal identities; The dialectics of mainstreaming/homogenizing otherness, depicted mainly through different ethnic minorities in the US, and the articulation of power from a subject position constitute the main aspects of the second nucleus. The third hypothesis analizes feminine subalternity in Latin American patriarchal systems and the performance of dissident micropolitics as a reterritorializing strategy of women resistance and subversion under authoritarian regimes. The present analysis strives to engage in a cultural and political debate on different mechanisms of hegemony and marginalization, as well as politics of representing cultural differences in society. Those who are compelled to remain in the peripheries are the ones whose essential identity is exile. 1998 Spanish text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391588391 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391588391 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
