Art History Ki no Tosa’s Butsuzo zui was written during the Edo period (1603-1868), which was a time of great change in Japanese society. The Butsuzo zui is significant because it is Japan’s first major study of Buddhist and Shinto iconography. The Tokugawa government, in order to preserve their national security, isolated themselves from foreign exchange. The port city of Nagasaki was the exception to this rule because it was allowed restricted trade access to the Dutch and the Chinese. Through Nagasaki the Japanese were exposed to Western maps, guidebooks, encyclopedias and scientific studies. Ki no Tosa’s method of describing Buddhist iconography, and recording information, was influenced by imported Chinese and Dutch manuals. This thesis explores selections of the Butsuzo zui's iconography and contextualizes it, by displaying how it fit in with the transmission of Buddhism to Japan, and the development of Edo period culture. Edo period society was marked by the growth of commercial printing and the evolution of a modem government. Edo culture reflects this with the secularization of Buddhism, the popularity of travel and pilgrimage, and the public’s access to information that in the past was only available to the privileged. All of these elements influenced the creation of the Butsuzo zui, as will be discussed in this thesis. 2007 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391587419 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391587419 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
