Included in this thesis are all of the records and documentation for the lighting design of this production.Through Gogol’s imaginative and playful prose, The Government Inspector satirizes the extensively corrupt bureaucracy of the Russian government under Tsar Nicholas I, while concurrently exploring universal themes of self-deception and exposing blemishes of human character. The director envisioned the play as “an unsettling slightly distorted cartoon” and called for our production to place emphasis on the play’s theme of “selective seeing,” emphasizing the idea that people see what they choose to see, and perceive what they observe in a manner that suits them.Supporting the director’s concept and the world of the play, the lighting design aimed to emphasize this concept of “selective seeing.” The lighting design attempted to draw attention to one thing while leaving others in the dark: endeavoring to expose what was to be seen, when it was to be seen, and how it was viewed. 2006 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391516848 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1391516848 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
