Is work a product, is it a practice, a making, a living, a learning, a life? What is work for an artist? Is work determined by the number of paintings one has completed for an exhibition, the number of objects accumulated, how much has sold? During my time here I have come to think of art making as something not limited to the idea of quantity. I have come to consider the notion of quantity to be a limit, which often we live up to, and usually don't go beyond. I have needed to "stand" inside my own vulnerability and find ways of extending working that are not as familiar, to extend the walls of my studio. I have begun to understand that making art isn't about having a really great statement to stand behind but rather a really great question to put forth that has the potential to engage me for a long time. A question can trace the paths of many/several trajectories as a means for extending the depth of understanding. My process of work has been the finding of the question of the work.

My question is framed around the space, or perhaps on the point of intersection where art and work meet. How can I make visible this point of intersection? My thesis exhibition and this written thesis intend to demonstrate some of the ways I have begun to answer this question. It has been important for me to realize at the conclusion of my graduate studies, that I have just begun this search for answers, and that only by continuing to mine through my frustrations and doubts, will I be able to answer the question.
2007 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1375202548 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1375202548 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
