The Perseverative Cognition hypothesis (PC), builds on this approach by suggesting that the process of worrisome or perseverative thinking represents a significant disease pathway through chronic or repeated cognitive representations of various stressors. Importantly, the link between PC and CVD risk has been explicitly described in the context of a neurovisceral pathway with direct and indirect links to the regulation of BP and the heart. In previous research (Hill, 2009), a sample of young, healthy, African Americans (AA) identified as having high trait PC exhibited elevated sympathetic nervous system-mediated hemodynamic activity and greater cardiac parasympathetic control (HRV). This pattern represents a `cardiovascular conundrum’ whereby elevations are observed for both a risk and a potential protective factor for cardiovascular disease.
