This is particularly concerning given the prevalence of the activity in contemporary society. The most common forms of multitasking typically involve some form of media. Media content is emotionally rich, containing both pleasant and unpleasant information of varying intensities. The presence of emotional content has been prominent in discussions of human information processing, yet noticeably absent from discussions of multitasking. This study seeks to contribute to understandings of multitasking by exploring the role of emotion. In the present study, participants completed a visual-pattern matching task while viewing images with varying levels of emotional arousal (from arousing to calm) and valence (from very positive to very negative). The interaction between emotional valence and arousal was found to play a crucial role in total multitasking performance. Emotional valence directly influenced perceptions of enjoyment while multitasking. Theoretical implications are discussed. 2013-08-09 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1366289749 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1366289749 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
