Previous studies have either examined carrying’s effect on physiologic measures or have examined vary narrow sections of the spine using biomechanical models. Additionally, most studies have tested a limited selection of carrying styles. This study analyzed forces imposed on the lumbar spines of 16 subjects while performing 6 styles of carrying at 2 weight levels and 2 levels of motion. The results indicated that loads carried in front of the body induced significant anterior-posterior (A/P) shear force on the spine whileseveral carrying styles produced spine loads indistinguishable from that seen while carrying nothing at all.
