I incorporate theories and aesthetics from fields such as: medical imaging, anthropology, psychology, semiotics, folklore, political theory, and the fine arts. I also search for meaning through pop culture, hip-hop culture, ethnic jewelry and folk arts. From this broad information base I investigate, through objects and images, new visualizations of my source research. I use my work as an opportunity to combine divergent sources and pose new questions through these juxtapositions.

The works that I make also serve as a catalyst for further research. The questions that I pose about the nature of adornment, the imaging of the body, and the psychology of body image lead me in search of new perspectives. I am always questioning my work. I do not seek answers in my research, simple new angles, niches that I have not yet explored. My writing demonstrates the process of my making: research, reflection, making, questioning and again, research. This process of making is fragmented, a sum that does not come to a cohesive whole, but an entwinement of related theories and overlapping ideas.

I have purposefully removed my personal interpretation of my work from the body of this thesis. I am interested in reflecting a feeling of sterol, scientific research that is also present in the instillation of my work. If feel that the insertion of my voice into this work would detract from the rhythm established between images, description and research sections. I am interested in the reader making connections between the work and research that I have not yet made. A personal interpretation of my work can be found in the artist statement and in a series of appendixes that following the main text.
2006 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1328894342 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1328894342 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
