Not just in the sense of how the environment impacts us, but more so on how modern technologies, political ideas (both new and old) and, sociological factors affect the world on a global level. Currently the world is considerably smaller due to high-speed communications and travel, yet the divides between cultures appear to be increasing. Why should this be the case?

I believe that as the media grants access to information about other cultures it must also shape the information in order to be grasped by those viewing it. The "facts" being presented are not form the others point of view, but rather from the perspective of those presenting it. As a consumer of these streams of information about places and people I have had little or no contact with I have two reactions. The first is that I feel better informed about the topic presented, but am left wondering about the validity of the information. Is this how the others would represent themselves?

The body of work presented in this research is a questioning of how well we understand or can relate to the world outside our culture. While I am speaking from within Western North American cultural confines, I wonder how different it would be to speak from within another culture. In presenting media from other cultures and their potential religions I am attempting to allow access to as broad an audience as possible to illustrate concerns I feel are shared by most people. Globalization is the catchphrase of contemporary politics but issues of isolationism and acceptance most be dealt with before the process of creating a global community can proceed yet alone succeed.
2003 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1328811997 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1328811997 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
