Diego Rivera

Rivera's sentiment applies directly to the works discussed in this thesis. If propaganda is defined as a direct persuasive statement of political or social opinion, the impact of these works seems to correspond to the strength of my convictions. The clearer I am on mypolitical position, the stronger the work's propagandavalue and the greater its impact.

As an artist I see my role to be that of an educator. I investigate ideas and present my interpretations through visual images. Blame is not placed on one person or group; rather the responsibility is spread around. The goal is not necessarily to offer a solution to the problems but touse satire, layering and/or repetition to bring them to theaudience's attention.

While child-related issues are used as a common theme, the primary focus of this work is the process by which society simplifies these as well as other issues to the point they are barely recognizable. This process of simplification begins with the mass media selecting an issue it deems as newsworthy and bringing it to the public's attention. The public reacts with initial interest; however this concern tends to be short-lived. Inan effort to maintain attention as long as possible, themedia presents the issues in increasingly black/white,right/wrong, or us/them terms. The degree to which thispolarization is taken depends on the nature of the detailsuncovered as the story unfolds, the political ramificationsinvolved, and other events which occur. Eventually, themedia and the public direct their attention and concernelsewhere. What remains is a relatively small number ofpeople who continue to work to resolve the problem and amajority who are left with a simplified understanding ofthe entire issue.

My works are primarily directed at the majority. I want to remind them that the problems exist even after the mass media has redirected its attention. Hopefully, empathy for the others involved and increased awareness of the complexity of the issues and our roles in each will result. Thus we will think more, deeper, and seek further answers.
2000 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1328806910 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1328806910 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
