The difference between the reality of household family life and what we learn it to be through play is what inspired me to begin work with this dollhouse. Prior to my graduate research, I thought it would be interesting to create a dollhouse based on a tenement slum or crack house. My investigations proved that I need not travel so far from what that I know. The understanding of the family unit I already posses proves to be a far richer source for inspiration and further investigation.

In our developing years, play constitutes learning. Though play we learn complexities such as socio-political issues, finance, psychology, and our role in society, I view my own research as a continuation of this type of play. Although there is a private element of performance to my work that allows for research, that is not the sole purpose of the work. To act out or recreate a synthesis of observations, reactions to stimuli, and emotions in order to learn, I create objects to be placed in particular relationships to each other. The objects are then placed on display so that others can, if not physically, intellectually join me in this play learning. In order to encourage this interaction I use visually divisive elements. To determine what is appealing to the viewer, I studied what people in general already posses or desire to posses, in essence the familiar and appealing. This thesis and my show also include my observations of that which is unappealing and why.

The final outcome of my work is a unity of my observations, opinions, knowledge and history. This can include attempts to reconcile and display a synthesis of seemingly opposite and irreconcilable qualities. Like leather motorcycle gang boy/girl images, a representation can be both off-putting and attractive at the same time. This is the element of such things such as kitsch, toys, synthetic nature, and personal relationships that I find intriguing and one reason why I use these elements in my work.

When we see a broken line, we rectify it in our minds. It is not seen as two lines but as one with a break in it. This is similar to the narrative that I present. The disjointed aspects of the narrative are blanks to be filled in. The purpose of this thesis is to give you permission to do so and to also see how I complete some of them.
2000 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1322854312 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1322854312 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
