There are two distinct sets of paintings within Cheese Show. One of the sets is called The Constructions, and these paintings are composed mostly of collage. The other set of paintings is called The Empty Paintings, because no collage is used in their execution. Both The Constructions and The Empty Paintings employ specific texture, use of color, and imagery to create sensations of anxiety and the feeling of being overwhelmed in the viewer. All of the paintings are made on paper, and all of the paintings are ninety-five inches tall. There are nine specific rules that are followed when the paintings are being made. Sometimes the rules are strictly adhered to, other times the rules are bent in order to achieve a certain effect.

The narrative that exists within the paintings is based on the things that I worship, or my comforts, and the things that I am fearful of. The narrative also addresses the fact that sometimes a comfort can also be something that I fear. The narrative is told with the use of a set of symbols, characters, and colors. Every shape and color has symbolic meaning. I don't expect the viewer to be able to decipher the narrative by simply looking at the paintings, but I would hope that the viewer senses the anxiety that 1 am interested in portraying. In future paintings, the narrative will continue, because I have not yet revealed every character and symbol. I do, however, expect that The Empty Paintings and The Constructions will begin to merge. The paintings that come after Cheese Show will most likely incorporate devices from both sets, and combine them into one.
2001 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1322761024 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1322761024 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
