The photographs symbolize a desire to be free - a desire to exist as an autonomous being, liberated from memories, learned behaviors, and self conscious doubt. The work is a result of both the childlike fantasy that we can "fly away" and an adult understanding of the extreme effort involved in freeing the self. This group of images also illustrates the level of performance that is often necessary in creating a body of work. I use my own hands in an attempt to create sophisticated hand puppets, mimicking various bird movements and behaviors. I create the forms in the privacy of my own home, using a homemade pinhole camera and a mock "stage". The stage is an empty black space - devoid of any context.
