A combined biobehavioral/cognitive behavioral therapy intervention (BBI/CBT) was developed, tested, and found to reduce depressive symptoms in 36 cancer patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder. However, the mechanism for the intervention’s efficacy is unknown. One plausible mechanism is the acquisition of compensatory skills, a construct that is associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms and reduced risk for relapse in CBT. The present study examined the role of compensatory skills in the BBI/CBT intervention using the Ways of Responding. Using paired t-tests, it was found that the BBI/CBT intervention did not result in a significant increase in compensatory skills. However, multilevel modeling (MLM) indicated that change in the quality of compensatory skills was related to a change in depressive symptoms. Finally, MLM indicated that initial compensatory skills were not significantly related to change in depressive symptoms. Future studies should examine other mechanisms for the efficacy of the intervention. 2011-12-16 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1322506678 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1322506678 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
