This out-door and indoor journey of improvisation and spectacle, entitled Furrow, was presented in Columbus, Ohio on May 16th, 1998.

The main goals of the the work were: to explore the possible social and aesthetic functions of a physical communal journey for an audience: to examine the potential of improvisation as a performance medium through an experimental period with a group of artists from different disciplines; to assess the possibility of a shared creative formal language between the performing and visual arts; and to produce a moving performance spectacle using the creative process and compositional tools of the visual artist. This was made through a focus on the creation of live tableaux composed of spatial, symbolic, and allegorical relationships. The work contrasted and compared the use of time and space in both the visual and performing arts, and examined the potential of a shared artistic vocabulary between these two art disciplines. Furrow was an exploration of the notion of the 'journey' as a particular manifestation of the elements, in human experience, of time and space. The idea of a 'journey' was also the key theme of a secondary element to the work, the narrative. The narrative and improvisation structures are jointly explored as creative techniques.

This thesis encompasses a cultural critique of the work, which was designed to question the importance of the relationship of live performance art to contemporary society, and the connected issues of audience participation and the communal authorship of art. Finally, this thesis includes a personal review of the work and its importance to my artistic practice and development.
1998 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1318957826 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1318957826 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
