Every day since then, I have photographed myself with a Polaroid camera and SX-70 film. I am solely responsible for releasing the shutter and making the exposure. Some days I'll be brushing my teeth, and think, "it's time," then take a Polaroid. Some days I'll think, "I should put on a funny hat." Then I'll think of a good name for somebody, a character who looks like that. When I look at them I see patterns. Everyday practices turn into ritual performances, and rituals turn into theatrical performances.</p><p>Erving Goffman refers to the term <i>performance</i> as all activity of an individual which occurs during a period marked by his continuous presence before a particular set of observers. While some of my performances take place in the presence of a live audience, many take place in solitude, with an imagined audience. The camera becomes an implied observer, and the Polaroid serves as documentation of the performance that will eventually meet with live viewers. The outcome varies: Some Polaroids are intensely personal, poignant, and dramatic; others are comedic and ridiculously hilarious.</p><p>The Polaroids are my visual diary. I write the date on the back of each one. I look at them and remember what was happening to me and how I was feeling. I also do it to: collect a cast of characters that are me; to live vicariously through performances of other possible selves; to resurrect a murdered nation of artists, writers, and prophets.</p><p>The content of the performances and documentation intends to question the position of a Jewish Other in a post-Shoah American society.
