Psychotherapy attitudes evaluative conditioning Three experiments involved the subliminal presentation of objects paired with prompts to enact approach or avoidance movements using a joystick. Experiment 1 demonstrated that this procedure can be used to form attitudes toward novel objects (nonsense words). Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated that it can be used to produce attitude change; approaching subliminally presented insects (Experiment 2) and spiders in particular (Experiment 3) reduced the negativity associated with other exemplars of those categories. These experiments extend earlier work in establishing the generality of attitude change induced by pairing subliminally-presented objects with approach or avoidance movements. They also contribute to the resolution of ongoing theoretical debates regarding the phenomenon of evaluative conditioning. 2011-10-20 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1313514587 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1313514587 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
