His ideas are surprisingly resilient, anti-systematic, and fascinating, yet the original concepts formed by these ideas are difficult to apprehend. Despite his popularity in Japan and in light of his prominence in the canon of modern Japanese literature, research on his works in English language scholarship seems insufficient. This thesis examines Ango’s conceptualizations of literature in the postwar period and describes their background in terms of Ango’s personal history and the history of his time. It explores the ideas that motivated his works and examines the works he is most famous for, his literary and historical essays.
