It was posited that individual differences and context factors separately and in interaction promote either adaptive or maladaptive patterns of cognition, affect, and behavior.

Subjects were 118 introductory psychology students who completed trait goal orientation measures and were exposed to a(n) successful, unsuccessful, or no early training experience. State goal orientation was assessed just prior to subjects working on a multi-media interactive biology program. Finally, participants completed measures assessing reactions to the training task and an incidental posttest.

Both trait goal orientation and early training experience accounted for a significant amount of variance in state goal orientation, but did not interact to influence reported goal orientation for the task. Little support was found for the influence of goal orientation on behavioral response patterns elicited by the training task and knowledge acquisition, but goal orientation exerted a strong effect on persistence, task interest, and satisfaction with task performance. Results are differentiated with respect to trait and state goal orientation as well as learning and performance goal orientation.

Results are discussed in terms of their theoretical implications for learning, motivational forces in training, and development of the goal orientation construct. Practical implications for the construction of training environments in organizations are also addressed. Avenues suggested for future research include the effect of goal orientation on other aspects of trainees' self-regulatory processes during the learning process, and a continued investigation of the joint role of individual differences and environmental elements on goal orientation and learning in organizational training settings.
1994 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1304089288 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1304089288 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
