This study examines the sources available to the bassoonist: excerpt collections, collections of etudes over orchestral passages, instructional literature, recordings and scholarly research on aspects of the important passages. These materials are reviewed for content, accuracy, pedagogical value and biographical information on the authors and editors/compilers. This paper can serve as a reference for bassoon players and teachers who wish to find sources for orchestral excerpt study and instruction.
