Through textual analysis and archival research, this dissertation performs a queer reading of the Civil Rights movement. Previous scholarship on African American autobiography has centered on analyzing race, gender, and the experience of being oppressed by the dominant culture. My project differs from previous scholarship because it explores the ways that hetero-normative and racialized surveillance influences African American constructions of the self. 2010-10-29 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1282156678 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1282156678 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
