Applications of the end product of microinjection molding include micro-fluidics, micro-optics, and medical instruments and devices. A few examples of micro fluidic devices include pumps, valves, capillary analysis systems, and flow sensors. The advantages of micro molding polymer optics include the following: the capability of manufacturing complex optical elements that share multiple working surfaces, and the capability of manufacturing high precision optical surfaces with low weight and reduced cost.

The first step of microinjection molding consists in the fabrication of a micro mold insert. A step which can be very tedious, but once a micro mold insert has been fabricated, many thermoplastic micro-parts can be molded in a short time, thus reducing the final cost. New innovate materials must be researched and new techniques need to be developed in order to satisfy the product performance requirements and meet the economic demand.

Main concerns of microinjection molding include the following: high aspect ratio of micro features, molten polymer resin cools rapidly due to an increase in contact surface between the relatively cold mold wall and the molten polymer, and the relatively high viscosity of polymeric materials.

There have been a few papers discussing the micro injection molding process, but to date, there is no comprehensive research that develops a clear understanding between the controllable process variables and the quality of the micro injection molded parts. The focus of this research was concentrated towards evaluating the capability of microinjection molding to produce deformable membrane mirrors. The effects of the control process variables of microinjection on the quality of the molded deformable membrane mirror were studied. Furthermore, the microinjection molded deformable membrane mirrors were tested using a Michelson Interferometer.
2010-08-23 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1268093770 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1268093770 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
