At the same time the levels of spending on IT surged. However, the empirical literature on the business value of IT has shown mixed results. Given the level of investments being made in IT there is an urgent need for academics and managers to understand how IT can affect firm performance.</p><p>This dissertation develops and tests a model examining the relationship between IT and firm performance. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of business processes, and the application of the resource based view of the firm and transaction cost economics. Performance on business processes is modeled in terms of IT and non-IT resources used in the process. The central argument of this research is that IT can provide a competitive advantage when IT resources are used to enable processes that cannot be replicated by the market. Competitive advantage is operationalized as above average performance on one business process. Hypotheses are developed regarding how the IT resources used in a process, individually and in interaction with non-IT resources, explain process performance. The hypotheses are tested empirically using primary data. The empirical analysis is based on the performance of the customer service process in the Life/Health insurance industrv.</p><p>Consistent with the resource-based view of the firm, the findings of this research suggest that firm specific resources explain variation in performance. Specifically, managerial IT knowledge, which is an important driver of how a firm develops and uses its IT capital, is the key IT resource which affects process and firm performance, rather than the IT investment by itself being the source of value.
