In this research, structural equation modeling was used to empirically test the causal model defined by the 1995 MBNQA. To measure the seven Baldrige categories, a research survey instrument was developed based on the award criteria, and subjected to two forms of pretest: review by the executive board of the Columbus, Ohio chapter of the American Society for Quality Control, and a sample of 38 quality professionals in manufacturing plants. The main sample consisted of mailing 720 surveys to Quality Managers in manufacturing firms from 15 different industries located throughout the U.S. from which 226 responses were received for a response rate of 31.4%. Survey instrument scales were checked for internal reliability by computing cronbach's alphas. The average value was 0.8538 with values ranging from a low of 0.7350 to a high of 0.9519. Criterion related validity and inter-rater reliability were also checked with all scales found to be valid and reliable. Considerable effort and multiple tests were done to ensure a highly reliable survey instrument.

Twenty four hypotheses were proposed and tested. The first 23 tested the linkages between the Baldrige categories and different performance categories (i.e. customer satisfaction and financial performance) while the last hypothesis tested the MBNQA criteria weighting structure. Causal models were tested using two different software packages: LISREL and RAMONA. Based on absolute and incremental fit statistics, all models exhibited an excellent fit to the data and explained approximately 50% of the variance in the performance variables.

The general conclusions from this research are as follows:

The overall logic and causal structure of the MBNQA was supported with a slightly different causal structure.

1. MBNQA category 2, Information and Analysis, is an important driver of manufacturing system performance.

2. MBNQA category 1, Leadership, had a direct effect on manufacturing system performance and no direct effect on customer satisfaction and financial performance.

3. The weighting system used by the MBNQA criteria compared to an equal weighting system was important in explaining performance results.
1997 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1261319885 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1261319885 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
