I am driven by how I often view myself as different from my surroundings and disassociated from my situation. Therefore, I am interested in my corporeal self rather than my subjective self in my artwork; my body‟s size, shape, residue, sound, and smell and its physical relationship to my surroundings are important. Capturing the presence and evidence of myself is a concept that interests me.

I have found, through my thesis work, that equally telling of ones physical self are the peripheral objects that surround us, or that we choose to surround ourselves with. Observing these objects and my spacial relationship with them must be factored into my studio practice. Therefore, material acts as subject matter more prevalently than image. A Duct tape cast of my toilet, or a Cherry Coke bottle filled with my own urine becomes a self-portrait and an investigation of self. Material, rather than image, becomes the signifier to self-identity.

I rely on material things in my work, but I do not intend to ignore the spiritual or theoretical aspect of my life. Quite to the contrary; through the study of physicality (that which is related to the body, rather than the mind, the soul, or feelings) and tangible, personal artifacts, I can naturally flush out and identify the subjective aspects of life, which, for me, are otherwise obscure.
2009 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1253654376 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1253654376 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
