Resources were operationalized as a measure of coping and a measure of spirituality. Psychoeducational health was a combined variable, defined as gpa and self-esteem.

Participants were 170 African-American(70 male and 100 female) undergraduates; all members of a university scholarship program. Participants were administered a measure of university alienation, a measure of university racism climate, a measure of coping, a measure of spirituality and a measure of self-esteem. GPA and the particpants' assessment of their probability to graduate was indicated on the demographic sheet.

Results indicated that environmental stressors and resources accounted for 30% of the variance in psychoeducational health for the combined sample, 31% for African-American females. Gender differences in levels of university alienation were found. African-American males yielding higher levels of university alienation than African-American females. For both the African-American male and African-American female samples, significantly higher levels of coping resources were related to high levels of self-esteem and perceptions of university alienation increased with perceptions of university racism climate. No interaction effects were found.

The findings of this study as they relate to the experimental hypotheses and research questions are presented. The limitations of the investigation, suggestions for future research and implications of the results are discussed.
1993 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1250276962 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1250276962 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
