In this dissertation, two innovative cross-layerdelivery protocols targeted for mission-critical networks areproposed. Multi-path Multi-SPEED (MMSPEED) protocol provides servicedifferentiation and probabilistic QoS guarantees in two QoS domains.By allowing higher layers to select the most appropriate level ofservice, MMSPEED allocates network resources to packets and provideprobabilistic guarantee to deliver packets within the applications'sQoS requirements. The second protocol is called Sectored-Antenna MAC(SAMAC) protocol which is an integrated set of cross-layercommunication protocols that exploits the potential benefits ofsectored-antennas. In addition, we propose two analytical models forIEEE 802.11 DCF mechanism that accurately predict the performance ofthe DCF mechanism with a wide range of system parameters. Simplifiedversions of these models are used to optimize the performance ofMMSPEED by selecting the optimal protocol parameters and to predictthe E2E delay performance of SAMAC protocol. 2009-09-24 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1250184419 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1250184419 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
