Environmental Science Forty 1-m2 wetland mesocosms at the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park at The Ohio State University were used to investigate the impact of wetland plant communities and hydrologic regimes on benthic populations. Twenty mesocosms were planted in May 2007 with a monoculture of Typha spp. and twenty with a more diverse plant community of Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, Juncus effusus, and Sparganium eurycarpum. Four hydrologic regimes were also established: steady state, pulsing, deep spring/shallow fall, and shallow spring/deep summer. Macroinvertebrates were collected in August 2008 using Hester-Dendy samplers and activity traps, and from vegetation surfaces. Statistically significant differences were found between taxon diversity indices by hydrology. Highest diversity was found in mesocosms with deep water in spring and shallow water in fall. Mixed vegetation mesocosms did not have higher diversity indices for macroinvertebrates than did Typha mesocosms. Statistically significant relationships between individual taxa and vegetation were found. 2009-09-03 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1243968714 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1243968714 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
