McCabe, Annie Michelle Geography Obesity Ranking Geography Men's Fittness Magazine Fattest and Fittest Cities The topic of obesity is one that is gaining increasing amount of attention from researchers as well as in the media. Men’s Fitness magazine produces a yearly ranking that categorizes fifty American cities as either fat or fit. This obesity related article sensationalizes a realistic health issue facing the United States with the notion of selling more magazines and by doing so the fat cities are faced with the public shame of being deemed fat, while the fit cities are glorified for their fitness. However the methods used in creating the Men’s Fitness fattest and fittest yearly ranking are questionable and therefore so are the resulting yearly ranks. In order to examine the spatial connection between obesity and place a second ranking was compiled using state level obesity data from the Centers for Disease Control’s Behavior Risk Factors Surveillance Survey. The two rankings are analyzed using statistical methods in combination with maps, and then compared to distinguish if the two rankings geographically match. Though the comparison, there are a few cities and states do seem to be more obese according to these rankings and there are a handful of cities and states that match in location. These results open the door to questions about how the ranking can be changed to more accurately identify obese places. 2008-12-08 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1228257071 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1228257071 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
