Chile women and politics gender This dissertation examines Chilean women’s evolutionary role in the political party system and explores how they impacted legislation and challenged the patriarchal family structure during the 1950s and 1960s. It shows how a new generation of women politicians abandoned attempts to forge a multi-class women’s movement in favor of expanding women’s political function in the party system. This study also explains how women consolidated power within the political parties and used their influence to incorporate feminist issues into party agendas. It argues that legislative battles that centered on women’s labor and social security in the 1950s and national day care and divorce in the 1960s illustrated a shift in how Chilean society viewed the existence of nontraditional families.
