Music subcultures subcultural identity subcultural clothing fashion postmodermisn youth cultures Music subcultures are postmodernist phenomena where members share distinctive behavior (musical tastes) and images (clothing). Music subcultures throughout time have been very important to our society because they allow individuals to explore and develop identities. Members use their sartorial images to symbolically frame and explain their social experiences. Contemporary music subcultures are becoming insignificant because of the fashion industry’s mass marketing of music subcultures’ specific styles to mainstream society. The music subculture is no longer about rebellion or revolt, but merely a “marketing device”. The purpose of this study is to ascertain which music subcultures and/or scenes contemporary youth are participating in with a specific focus on the sartorial styles attributed to each subculture, and whether the members use the subcultural dress to identify themselves as part of the group. If the participants do not claim to use dress for subcultural identification then I wanted to find out what criteria they do use to claim subcultural membership. Finally, this study considered how the contemporary music subcultures/scenes are influencing mainstream fashion and culture. This study will be important to the field of Textiles and Clothing because of the psychological importance of clothing and personal adornment through contextual perspectives, such as music scenes. Historically, music subcultures have not only provided youth with outlets for creativity and identity formation, but they have also been the inspiration for many mainstream sartorial designs. 2007-03-27 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1173232632 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1173232632 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
