From a family systems perspective, this study examines the effects of stressors/supports within the parent-child subsystem (children's behavior problems, father involvement) and couple subsystem (interparental conflict, marital status) on mother's risk of depression. Using data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), this study examined the responses of 117 mothers of children with physical and/or mental disabilities on their depressive symptomatology, children's maladaptive behavior problems, various topics of conflict with the child's father, and various aspects of father involvement (amount of father contact with the disabled child, mother's satisfaction with the father's parenting). Overall, findings showed that the amount of conflict with the child's father and the amount of contact the father has with the child influences mother's risk of depression. Further examination by marital status revealed significant differences between married mothers (n = 64) and single mothers (n = 53). Married mothers indicated that the frequency of conflict with their spouse was the strongest contributor to their depressive symptomatology. In contrast, single mother's risk of depression was clearly influenced by their history of depression, conflict with the child's father, and the amount of contact the father had with the disabled child. 2006 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1172775093 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1172775093 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
