Based on the relative importance of the counselor gender preference, 92 of the 115 subjects listened to one of four audio tapes of counseling sessions. The tapes varied the sex of the counselor and the response styles of counselor behavior (reflective or directive styles). The results of the preference questionnaire indicated (a) the total sample and the female subjects most preferred the amount of counseling experience, (b) the male portion of the sample most preferred the age of the counselor, and (c) the modal response for counselor gender preference was “no preference”, and the modal responses of those who preferred the gender of the counselor was the same sex as the respondents.
